My grandfather worked the Skagit logging camps in the winter of 1974. He told this story exactly twice, and both times he stopped halfway through. There was a shape in the alders past the creek bend that hung upside down and did not move when the lamps swung toward it. The dogs would not cross the water after that night, and the camp was abandoned before the thaw.
